Carlos Diaz: A Collage/Montage Barrage at KickstART Gallery

“For 40 years (Carlos) Diaz’s work has revolved around his interest in the fluidity of history and memory, the connections between people and place and how race relations impact the world in which we live.”

This beautiful and timely exhibition exemplifies the spirit of the quotation above.

The four categories of the exhibition – INVENTED LANDSCAPES, SHANTIES, OBJECTS and ITINERANT HABITAT: Mobile Homes – are comprised of works that Diaz has envisioned, created, revisited, and recreated as he has moved through time, memory, people, and place. This is not to say that earlier versions of his work have become any less vital, but rather that art must remain fluid in order to stay vital and alive. Without question, Diaz’s everyday life is deeply connected to the constant act of creating. He utilizes photography, vintage steel plate engravings collaged onto black and white silver prints, selectively toned silver prints, and archival inkjet print techniques to capture his visions.

It was a great pleasure to curate this exhibition with Executive Director Dwayne Hayes and Carlos Diaz, 2024 Guggenheim Fellow. — Ted Lee Hadfield
